Volunteer Spotlight

September 2024

Luisa

Meet Luisa, our Volunteer of the Month for September! Luisa has been a volunteer since June 2022 and has spent more than 170 hours helping the animals of Greenhill over the past 2 years. She provides both socialization for the cats and customer service for the humans while splitting her time between our Cattery Enrichment and Cattery Matchmaker volunteer positions. She also volunteers intermittently for Friends of Eugene Public Library and has previously volunteered for Community Outreach in Corvallis as well as local crisis hotlines.

Luisa loves volunteering with the cats, who are her favorite animals—which isn’t surprising since she has four of them at home! Equally important to her is the opportunity to help people through her volunteer work. She says, “I really enjoy getting to interact with so many different animals, and as a Matchmaker it is so heartwarming to watch people fall in love with their next pet.”

Though Luisa grew up in Corvallis, her husband’s long hours at his job in Eugene when their daughter was a baby encouraged her to make the move south in 2007. She has worked as a nurse for more than 20 years in hospitals and nursing education, and she spent many of those years as an oncology nurse.

When she’s not working, helping the animals, or spending quality time with her family, Luisa’s many hobbies include reading, travel, running, biking, watching movies, baking, and gardening. A favorite recent travel experience she highlights is her trip with her daughter to Portugal this last spring. She recalls that “the language barrier was more difficult than I expected, but the pastel de nata pastries definitely lived up to the hype; we ate tons of them!”
