Hang on, why is an animal shelter posting about rescue hamsters? Don’t shelters just deal with dogs and cats? Actually, Greenhill frequently cares for a variety of animals, (18 different species last year) including: rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, even the occasional gerbil or chinchilla. But, since it’s National Hamster Day (that’s right!) we’re sending a special shout-out to hammies with just a few reasons we think rescue hamsters make great pets.

One: Rescue hamsters tend to be well socialized! The hamsters in our care get daily handling from staff and volunteers, plus healthy treats and one-on-one attention, so they’re often more social than a hamster straight from the pet store.

Two: Hamsters like routine and schedules. They’re nocturnal, which is perfect for many people—especially if you’re an adult. Your new little friend is happy to sleep all day while you’re at work and will be ready to play in the evenings.

Three: Hamsters can help you beat loneliness. Unlike many small animals, hamsters like to live alone and have their own space. However, this means that rather than bonding to a fellow hamster, they really enjoy the companionship of a respectful human friend.

Four: Hamsters can help you meet your healthy lifestyle goals. Not even kidding—these guys are exercise fanatics. You may not be able to take them on walks, but watching their enthusiasm as they run on their wheel can be a great motivation to hop on the treadmill yourself! (By the way—choosing the right wheel for your exercise buddy is important. We’re happy to give you recommendations on a safe, solid wheel that’s the appropriate size for your tiny fitness guru.)

Five: Um, cuteness factor! With those fluffy faces, bright eyes, and cheek pouches that can hold up to 20% of their body weight in food, hamsters are some of the most adorable critters around. Whether your hammy likes to curl up and sleep in the palm of your hand or prefers going on explorations through homemade mazes, they are endlessly entertaining.
