Volunteer Spotlight

November 2024

Nancy

Meet Nancy, our Volunteer of the Month for November! Since she started volunteering in February 2020, Nancy has given more than 770 hours of her time to the shelter. She currently supports our Specialized Species Department as an enrichment volunteer and volunteer trainer in both the rabbit and guinea pig rooms, and in the past she has also volunteered in our cattery. Her interest in volunteering was first piqued when she adopted a cat from Greenhill 45 years ago, and we’re so glad she’s on our team now!

Nancy has lived most of her life in the Junction City and Cheshire area, with the exception of a few stretches spent out of the area with her career US Navy husband. Her first jobs were in the berry and bean fields. Later, she supervised a large group of students as an office manager at the University of Oregon, and went on to edit and publish lecture notes for professors. Eventually, she left her position to become a full-time mom, and ultimately returned to the workforce as an educator in her local school district who taught reading to below-grade-level and special education students. Now, she volunteers with Greenhill while enjoying a well-earned retirement; she also volunteers with Soroptimist International of Junction City and previously volunteered 20 hours per week with the Junction City Local Aid food pantry.

In her spare time, Nancy cares for her three cats, two gerbils, and two chickens—five of whom are Greenhill graduates—and describes herself as a “voracious reader of historical fiction.” She also loves to travel the world with her husband, Dave. Some of her favorite photos from their travels include kittens wrestling on the banks of the Nile and dogs playing and racing each other in Iceland. She recalls a particularly memorable trip out of the country: “We were lucky to spend a week on Antarctica, studying micro-plastic pollution in the southern seas. One day at a Gentoo penguin rookery, a month-old chick approached me, climbed on my boots & tried eating the string on my jacket. And I have it all on video!”

Being a mom and an educator taught Nancy a lot about patience, which prepared her well for working with animals who may be scared or have limited experience with people. She says, “Not all of the GH animals want to be a rescued but the first time one of our wild, scared babies seeks you out and asks to be loved on and comforted, that’s one of the greatest feelings in the world!”
