Greenhill’s Kitten Shower Celebration all Summer Long

Celebrate Kitten Season by adopting a kitten, donating needed supplies, or fostering

EUGENE, OREGON – (June, 7 2023) – Summer is here and so are the kittens! “Kitten Season” has already begun which means it’s time to bulk up on care supplies for the hundreds of feline babies who will come to Greenhill Humane Society needing medical treatment, socialization, love, and shelter. Greenhill cares for cats and kittens year-round, but as the shelter intake significantly increases this time of year, the shelter encourages the local community to adopt kittens, donate vital supplies, and volunteer to participate in Greenhill’s foster program.

“Kitten season is the time of year when unspayed, female cats are likely to have a litter of kittens. We anticipate seeing hundreds of kittens in desperate need of bottle feeding, medical attention and love,” said Sarah Bouzad, Greenhill’s Community Engagement & Events Manager. “Thanks to the help of our tremendous foster families, most of these kittens are under our care for an average of 8 weeks, receive nutritious food, vaccines and are spayed or neutered before going up for adoption. Donations of supplies are critical to saving these young kittens’ lives.”

Animal lovers that want to help can view Greenhill’s online wish lists to ship items directly to the shelter or can drop donations off at Greenhill all summer long. The shelter’s high demand items include KMR (kitten milk replacer), momma cat and kitten canned food and kibble, digital food scales used to weigh the kittens, mini Miracle Nipples, Playpens, and Snuggle Safes. The donated supplies are utilized in Greenhill’s foster program.

Last year, Greenhill’s foster families cared for 479 kittens. So far in 2023, Greenhill has sent over 208 kittens into foster homes and expects this year’s total to exceed last year’s. Foster homes provide a calm, quiet place for an animal to heal and learn to trust. Foster families receive all necessary supplies and support from Greenhill’s veterinary team. The animal’s length of stay can vary depending on the animal’s needs and the foster parent’s availability. Anyone interested in becoming a foster family for these babies can learn more here (https://www.green-hill.org/foster_care).

People interested in adopting a kitten should keep an eye on the Greenhill website for available kittens and visit Greenhill between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. The shelter is operating on a first come first served limited capacity basis.

All kitten and adult cat adoptions include: a physical exam and behavioral evaluation by trained staff, spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, flea and worm treatment, a collar and ID tag, pre-adoption consultation, microchip registered with 24Petwatch, and post-adoption support. All cats must be transported home in a carrier (available to purchase for $5).
