EUGENE, OREGON – (September 1, 2023) – Last week, thirty-five cats were received by Greenhill Humane Society from a local hoarding and neglect case. The cats were all abandoned in a rented Eugene apartment.

“All of these cats have health issues including ringworm and some more serious conditions. We are working to provide them with the care and treatment they need,” said Ashley Lalan, Greenhill’s Feline Program Manager. “Initially they were timid, but they’ve warmed up to our team and are proving to be outgoing, friendly cats. Adoptive families will find that after a little bit of time and trust building, there will be a loyal bond.”

All thirty-five of the cats have ringworm, a highly contagious, but treatable zoonotic disease. Treatment can take months, but is something that can be done in a home environment. For that reason, Greenhill is looking to find families to adopt the cats while still under treatment. Adopters will be provided with training, medication and supplies to continue treatment in their home.

“We are looking to find homes for these cats quickly,” said Sarah Bouzad, Greenhill’s Community Engagement & Events Manager. “We currently have over 160 animals in our care, and more coming in every day. Because each of these cats require extra time and care, it reduces the number of animals we can care for overall.”

Currently, seven of the cats will be available for adoption beginning on Friday, September 1 and eight more cats becoming available for adoption on Saturday, September 2. The age of the cats ranges from 1.5 years to 2 years old. More cats will become available for adoption in the coming weeks. While some of the cats are initially shy, many are very friendly and affectionate. The adoption price for these cats has been reduced to $45. There will be a special process for adopters including education about the cats’ care needs. Adopters will be provided supplies necessary to make treatment manageable.
