Community Cats
Lane County is home to many “community cats.” These are outdoor, unowned, free-roaming cats. They can be friendly or skittish, young or old, altered or unaltered. They may or may not have a caregiver. These cats can live individually or they might live in colonies. You can learn more by visiting our Outdoor and Community cats page.
Services for Community Cats
Greenhill’s TNR (trap – neuter – return) program was started in 2009 to help reduce the overpopulation of community cats. Since the inception of the program, we have performed an average of 900 TNR surgeries each year.
Due to the high need for this service, Greenhill is prioritizing managed colonies of 20 or more cats. If you are needing spay/neuter for an individual cat or a group of less than 20, please click the green button below.
The TNR program is not available for any owned cats.
For assistance with TNR for a colony you are caring for, please follow these steps:

- Before you trap, make sure you have a scheduled appointment
- All cats must come to Greenhill in approved, humane live traps - regardless of temperament. We offer traps for rental. See handout below on steps for trapping.
- All cats will receive an eartip (removal of approximately 1/4 of the distal ear flap from the right ear), the universally-accepted symbol of a sterilized and rabies vaccinated community cat
- TNR Package: $45 - Includes spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations (FVRCP & Rabies), flea treatment, eartip, long-lasting pain medication, and free humane trap rental with refundable deposit
Financial assistance may be available through grant funding and the donations of generous supporters whose gift ensures that this program remains accessible to those unable to cover the full cost of the services. You will be able to indicate the need for financial assistance during the scheduling process.

Spay/Neuter Services for the Public
Greenhill Humane Society does not provide spay/neuter services to the public other than through the TNR Program for Community Cats. For information about Spay/Neuter services for your pets please contact your veterinarian or one of the organizations listed below (expand for details).
The City of Eugene Spay & Neuter Clinic provides low-cost spay/neuter and other services such as microchipping and sale of flea/worming medications.
