Some of the cats are available for adoption with more becoming available in the coming weeks
LANE COUNTY, OREGON – (February 19, 2025) – On February 12 Greenhill Humane Society received seventeen cats from Springfield Animal Control after a second-alarm apartment fire in Springfield. All of the cats required emergency care including oxygen therapy and treatments for injuries to their eyes, lungs and burned paws.
“When the cats arrived, it was clear they needed immediate emergency care due to smoke inhalation and burn injuries,” said Kelly Fleischmann, Greenhill’s Community Engagement Manager. “After a few days in intensive care with oxygen therapy and medical treatments, fourteen of the seventeen cats improved, and they have begun to show us their friendly, sweet personalities. Considering what they have been through, these cats are little walking miracles. We are grateful to Springfield Fire Department for rescuing these cats and Springfield Animal Control for assisting in their safe care.”
After 24 hours of around-the-clock care, the cats were released from intensive care. They continue to receive care for the injuries to their eyes, lungs, and paw pads caused by the smoke and fire. Unfortunately, three neonatal kittens succumbed to their injuries.
Most of the cats are friendly, curious, and affectionate. The age of the cats ranges from 19 days to 4 years old. Four of the adult cats will be placed up for adoption starting today, Wednesday, February 19. Those requiring more care will be provided treatment and become available over the coming weeks. The six kittens under 2 months old will continue receiving all the care they need in a foster home.
People interested in adopting these cats can visit Greenhill’s website (www.green-hill.org) or visit the shelter between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Greenhill is always looking for temporary foster families to open their hearts and homes to help animals in need. Providing a comfortable, temporary home allows an animal to receive a little extra attention and time away from other animals in the shelter.
