Volunteer Information

Without our volunteers, Greenhill could not provide its current high level of service to the animals and people of our community!

Volunteer Member Team Values

What our volunteers are saying...

What to expect as a Greenhill volunteer:

  • Volunteers are asked to make a regular commitment to coming out for a shift weekly.
  • Shifts are scheduled in advance and being on a set schedule is highly encouraged.
  • Most shifts are 2 hours in length and available 7 days a week between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. (depending on what area).
  • Depending on what area you are volunteering, you may need to be able to be on your feet most of your shift, bend, lift, work around cleaning products, provide great customer service and/or get a little dirty.
  • Reliable transportation to the Greenhill Road shelter location is necessary.
  • Volunteers 12-15 years in age can join the team with a parent/guardian see our Youth Volunteers tab for details.
  • Ages 16+ are welcome to come out on their own.

Volunteer Spotlight

April 2025

Barry and Pamela

Meet Barry and Pamela, our Volunteers of the Month for April! Barry and Pamela are a married couple who have volunteered with Greenhill since April 2023. Over the past two years, they have volunteered for more than 200 hours apiece. During their recurring shifts each week, they provide enrichment and exercise to our rabbits, guinea pigs, and other small animals. Prior to getting started at Greenhill, Barry previously volunteered at White Bird Clinic, Volunteers in Medicine and some medical mission trips.

Pamela grew up in Eugene and Barry grew up in Vancouver, B.C.; the pair met and married in Hawaii in 1977. For the first few years of their marriage, they lived in Barry’s hometown so that Barry could finish school, but they moved to Eugene in 1983 to be closer to Pamela’s family. Their travels didn’t end in the United States and Canada: in the early 80s, they took their 5-year-old son on a 5-month backpacking trip through Africa, the Middle East, Europe and the UK! Both now enjoy a well-earned retirement after Barry spent his career as a family practice physician and Pamela spent hers as a florist who owned her own flower shop.

Both Barry and Pamela have a wide array of interests that they enjoy in their spare time. Barry loves dancing, participating in dance exercise classes, playing the oboe, and participating in orchestras and quintets. Pamela enjoys creating welded art, playing the piano (previously flute and cello as well before she developed hearing loss) and caring for the couple’s three Greenhill graduate guinea pigs: Kevin, Stuart and Doug.

Barry and Pamela describe their time in the small animal rooms at Greenhill as “peaceful and uplifting.” The couple loves spending time in the company of the animals during their shifts, and they consider the most rewarding part of their volunteer work to be helping those animals get comfortable with people and more easily find their forever homes.  They share, “We have learned what a great organization Greenhill is and how dedicated the staff and volunteers are. It is very gratifying to learn how many other like-minded people there are in our community who care as deeply about animals as we do.”
